Tiger happy with new putter, not with score
Aug 31, 2018

NORTON, Mass. -- A new putter went in the bag for Tiger Woods on Friday, the second change he's made this year and one that yielded immediate results.

But instead of the low score he was looking for, Woods salvaged a mediocre one that would have been far worse had he not gotten several putts to drop.

For the 13th time in 16 opening rounds on the PGA Tour, Woods failed to break par at TPC-Boston, where he shot 1-over-par 72 at the Dell Technologies Championship.

"I putted beautifully today, I really did,'' said Woods, who gained more than 1.7 strokes on the field and was ranked among the top 15 players compared to being second-to-last at the Northern Trust last week. "I hit a lot of good putts, and just have to give myself more looks out of them. I didn't hit the ball close enough today.''

Woods hit just nine of 18 greens and started ominously with his first tee shot -- he started on No. 10 -- pulled into a hazard, leading to a bogey. He was 3 over par through seven holes before making his first birdie at the par-3 17th.

And he twice saved bogeys with 6-foot putts or his round could have gotten out of hand. He is tied for 57th, seven shots back of first-round leader Justin Rose, who shot 65.

For the day, Woods made just three birdies at a course where he's finished outside of the top 11 only twice in nine appearances. He has a victory and two runner-up finishes at TPC-Boston.

But Woods will have a hard time contending if he doesn't give himself more opportunities.

That wasn't the issue last week at the Northern Trust, where Woods hit the ball beautifully but couldn't buy a putt.

Not entirely by coincidence, Woods had a new putter this week, a TaylorMade prototype that looks like and feels like his old Scotty Cameron model -- the one he started the year with and also the one he used to win 13 of his 14 major titles.

Woods switched away from the Cameron in June at the Quicken Loans National, going to a TaylorMade model that looked more like a mallet. The face has grooves that he liked, and the results were good: a tie for fourth at the Quicken Loans, a tie for sixth at The Open and -- following a tie for 31st at the WGC-Bridgestone -- a runner-up finish at the PGA Championship.

But during last week's Northern Trust, where Woods tied for 40th, his putting stats were the fourth-worst of his career.

"We have been working on this putter since about the National time, the last couple of months, and trying to get a putter that looked exactly like my old putter,'' he said. "But it has the grooves in it to roll the ball better. And we finally got one. And I liked it. I felt good with it.

"We had to adjust the loft on it just a touch the other day, and I found that my feels came back, the release is something that I'm very familiar with and it felt good.''

The Dell Technologies Championship is the second of four FedEx Cup playoff events. The field of 98 players will be cut to the top 70 and ties after Saturday's round, with the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings advancing to next week's BMW Championship.

Woods, at 25th, is assured of making it to the tournament at Aronimink Golf Club. In order to qualify for the Tour Championship later next month, he will need to be among the top 30 after the BMW Championship.

Tiger Woods Whats In The Bag?

In 2019 Tiger Woods won The Masters and ZOZO Championship and tied with Sam Snead for the most wins on the PGA Tour with 82. He also led the US Presidents Cup team to victory in Australia. Lets take a look into the bag he used to do so.

Woods doesnt change his equipment very often, especially when it comes to his irons and wedges, but has now found a relatively consistent setup as a TaylorMade staffer two years after Nike stopped making equipment.

The 15-time major winner had the TaylorMade M3 driver in the bag last year but he has switched to theM5 with its Speed Injected Twist Face. To find out more on how the technology works click here.

He has also switched his M3 3-wood for an M5 however he has still got a 5-wood version of the older model.

Woods also occasionally carries a 2-iron. The model he goes for at the moment is a brand new P790 UDI option from TaylorMade.

Interestingly, Woods has also opted for a new set of irons in 2019, shifting from theTW Phase 1 bladed ironsto the P7TW Prototypes. These go from 3-iron down to the pitching wedge.

The 15-time Major winner relinquished his final Nike clubs in the form of his VR Forged wedges, replacing them with two TaylorMade Milled Grind wedges. He has since updated those to the new Milled Grind 2 models which have 56 and 60 degrees of loft

He appears to be lacking a gap wedge but his sand wedge may be stronger than the 56 it says or his PW may be a touch weaker.

The lack of gap wedge allows him more options at the top end of the bag, hence a set of irons from 2/3-PW.

Tiger used three putters last year having started with his beloved Scotty Cameron and then moving on to a TaylorMade Ardmore 3 mallet at the Quicken Loans National in July.

Woods then switched it out for a TaylorMade TP Black Copper Juno

That wasnt in the bag for very long, however, as he went back to his Scotty Cameron at the BMW Championship last year and used it to win both The Tour Championship and in 2019 at The Masters by one stroke.

His previous Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS putter, which he won all but one of his 15 Majors with,is one of the worlds most famous putters an old backup he had made by Scotty Cameron in 2001 recently sold for $44,000 at auction.

At The Open Championship 2019 he was also playing around with a new Scotty Cameron putter as you can see below

For the 2019 season he continues to use the Bridgestone Tour B XS golf ball after signing with the company in December 2016.

How Tiger Woods' Scotty Cameron putter differs from others

By: David Dusek | March 27, 2018 11:42 am

During his recent comeback, the strongest part of Tiger Woods game has been his putting. He ranks fourth on Tour in one-putt percentage (45.06 percent), 13th in three-putt avoidance (1.85 percent), 18th in putting from inside 10 feet (89.77 percent) and 14th in strokes gained: putting (0.739).

Not too shabby for a 42-year-old who effectively had been away from competitive golf for three years and had multiple back surgeries.

Woods has used a Scotty Cameron putter to win all 14 of his major championships. At the 1997 Masters, he used a black-finished Scotty Cameron Newport Teryllium TeI3 with white vibration-dampening dots on the back, but for his other 13 titles Woods used a custom Newport 2.

Cameron has made heel-toe weighted blade putters such as Woods since before he joined Titleist in 1994. The first Newport putter was part of the Classics family in 1995, and like the other Classics that yearthe Catalina, Coronado, Del Mar, La Costa, Laguna and Napait was named after a town in California.

The first Newport 2 was made available in 1997. The main difference between Newport and Newport 2 putters is the look at address: Newport putters have rounder lines, while the back bumpers and edges of the Newport 2 putterare sharper for players who like a mechanical look.

Newport2 putters from the late 90s were 35 inches long and had a plumbers neck to create a small amount of toe hang, along with a dark finish. They came standard with 4 degrees of loft, a 71-degree lie angle and a single alignment line.

Woods put his now-famous custom Newport 2 into play in 1999. While the basic shape has not changed much over the years, there are significant differences between Studio Newport 2 putters available at retail and the putter Woods uses.

Woods Newport 2 is made from German Stainless Steel (GSS), a very expensive material Cameron only uses on putters that are going to be used by professionals or sold in his gallery in Encinitas, Calif. It has a slightly softer feel at impact, but Cameron has said on many occasions that it would not be practical to use GSS in retail putters because many recreational golfers would not feel a significant difference, and using GSS would substantially increase the price.

The Select Newport 2 you can buy in stores today is made from 303 stainless steel. Numerous pros on the PGA Tour use Scotty Cameron putters that are made from 303 stainless steel, and Cameron prefers it for retail putters because it delivers a soft feel and looks good when polished but is not excessively expensive.

The face of Woods Newport 2 was milled and then made smooth, but starting in 2005 with the Studio Style line, the milling pattern in putters such as the Newport 2 became more pronounced. Like corduroy pants, if you pull your finger across the face of a modern Scotty Cameron Newport, you will hear a zipping sound. The circular milling patterns are created by the machines as they shave off ribbons of material while shaping and honing the hitting surface.

Todays Select Newport 2 not only features milling patterns, it also has a 303 stainless steel face insert. Using a face insert allowed Cameron to add vibration-dampening material inside the head to enhance sound and feel.

When it was new, Woods Newport 2 putter weighed 326 grams. At the time, that weight would have been considered typical for a 35-inch putter. Many consumers today are showing a preference for heavier putters, so the current Studio Newport 2 weighs 345 grams.

Since 2008, Newport 2 putters have been designed with adjustable weights in the sole. They are not designed to be changed by golfers, but custom fitters and technicians in the factory can change the weights using a tool. The same head can be modified so the overall weight and swing weight can be adjusted based on the putters length and player preferences.

Alignment Aids
Woods Newport 2 has a single dot on the top line that helps him put the sweet spot directly behind the center of the ball. Todays Studio Newport putters come with a single black alignment line on the back flange.

Woods does not use a Scotty Cameron putter grip. Instead, he has preferred a Ping PP58 grip for years. It is the same grip that was fitted to the Ping Anser 2 putters Woods used as a junior.

Todays Studio Newport 2 putters come standard with an 11-inch, mid-size Matador grip that weighs 77 grams. The larger, heavier grip matches the heavier head and aligns with the trend to larger putter grips.

Even a good custom fitter cant change the materials used to make a putter, but he or she can do a lot to personalize your flat stick. Grips can be changed, alignment aids can be added or modified, and a putters weight can be tweaked. So while you probably will never win 14 majors, with the help of a good fitter and the right putter, you certainly will give yourself a better chance of holing more putts and lowering your scores.
