What Early or Mild Hair Loss Looks Like, With 10 Celebrity Examples

Celebrities are just like the rest of us! They get older, go bald, start taking Viagra, and eventually die. Sure, many celebs are follicly blessed, or they get hair transplants. But some just let their locks shed naturally too, and Im going to celebrate a few celebs who have experienced hair loss.

This post will be fun and educational! My aim isnt to out any celebrity but to show what early hair loss looks like in an informative, compelling way. I included approximate timelines, so you can do some additional Google Image searches, if desired. Lets begin.

1. Ed Sheeran 2013ish-Present

Eva Rinaldi. Source.

Sheeran uses a popular receding hairline style technique (i.e. his bangs!) to mask what is likely an early-onset case of male pattern baldness. It started around 2013, I believe. If you look at recent of him, youll see more thinning than this. His hair loss isnt moving at a particularly fast pace, but the thinning is fairly obvious. As hairs miniaturize and the balding process progresses, those hairs become smaller, shorter, and lighter. His locks along the front part of his hairline are noticeably wispy and a lighter shade of ginger.

UPDATE On Sheerans latest tour and promotional rounds, his hair looked stronger and healthier. Is he on Propecia or some other hair loss remedy? I dont want to speculate, but its certainly possible!

2. Tom Hanks 1992ish-1996

Photo Credit: Fandango, Youtube. Sleepless in Seattle, 1993. You can see slight thinning along the left corner.

Photo Credit:Paramount Pictures. Forrest Gump, 1994. Hanks couldnt hide his receding hairline for this role! It had probably gone back a bit since his Sleepless in Seattlenights. The long hair minimized the receding reality for some time, I would imagine. An M (or wavy V) shape, shown above, is a classic sign of mild or early male pattern baldness.

3. Prince harry 2011ish to 2014

Public domain.

Harry reportedly used to like to tease William about his hair loss, then poor Harry got hit with the Royal Family, baldness curse, too! Karma? Perhaps! His hair quality started to diminish right around the time of Williams wedding, if Im not mistaken, around 2011. Thats probably when the process began for Harry. His bald spot became visible in 2013 or 14.

4. Prince William 2004-2006

This was the earliest evidence I could find showcasing Williams male pattern baldness. I can see quite a few shorter hairs along the hairline; those hairs are miniaturizing and likely just beginning the balding process. Compared to his younger photos, the overall quality of his hair seems lower here a common and overlooked sign of hair loss. The English elements are playing a role, granted. His hair just looks kind of ratty, another hair loss symptom. The above picture was taken in 2004, and thats approximately when Williams journey to baldness began.

Photo by PA. This picture is from Williams college graduation in 2005. The thinning had progressed substantially by this point, and was visible throughout most of his scalp. See how his hair looks sort of rough or chewed? Thats a sign of aggressive, early-onset hair loss.

5. Steve Carell Mid to Late 1990s.

Steve Carell famously had thin hair in season 1 of The Office. He solved his genetic problem by season 2, I believe most likely with a hair transplant. Heres a good shot of him, probably in the late 90s. You can see his left hairline corner is collapsing inward here, a telltale sign of early hair loss. The part looks sloppy and old-man like. Having trouble styling your hair, by the way, is another common sign of hair loss.

6. Dak Prescott (NFL Quarterback) 2015-Present

Again, thinning at the corners. You can see it here, just slightly. More scalp is visible along the edges of his hairline, and his hair is lighter there. I go into further detail about Prescott and your other favorite, balding NFL quarterbacks in my post, The Top 10 Balding NFL Quarterbacks (and Tom Bradys Awesome Hair Transplant).

Blake Bortles is one of the top 10 balding NFL quarterbacks. This is another example of what a chewed out hairline can look like.

7. Judd Law 1995ish-2000

Photo Credit: Miramax/Paramount. Screenshots, The Talented Mr. Ripley, 1999. His hairs appear weaker and shorter around the corners and theres some recession.

Judd Laws hairline started receding in his early 20s. Hes 26-27 in the photos above. You can see hes still got a v-shaped hairline, kind of, which is the shape of a mature hairline. But Judds V-shaped hairline is taking a sharp turn, up and over to the left. By the early 2000s, his hairline was undeniably M-shaped. Then, by the middle part of the decade, Judd had an island of hair up front (surrounded by a bald ocean). Now hes pretty much just bald. But no worries, he meets all the five look-good-bald parameters!

8. Mike Trout 2015ish-Present

This one is debatable. But it looks like his hairline corners are just starting to collapse on him, creating a kind of U-Shaped hairline. Hes the best player in baseball, so who cares!

9. Dr. Phil, 1963ish! At Only 12-13 Years Old!Photo Credit: Dr Phils Website.

Dr. Phil and the rapper DMX famously commiserated about their receding hairlines. And your favorite TV doctor started going bald very young. The above picture is Dr. Phils Jr. High school photo, and hes already balding there! On the Norwood scale, I would say hes an early class III patient in that photo. You can see the beginning stages of an island of hair, forming at the center of his forehead. Its extremely rare for men to start going bald this young, but technically, hair loss can occur anytime after the onset of puberty. Hair loss in the late teens and early 20s, comparatively, is very common, as I state in my hair loss 101 post.

10. James Spader, Early 2000s

James on Charlie Rose in 2002. Youtube Screenshot.

I documented James long and strange hair loss journey in this post. He seemed to have full head of hair well into his middle ages, then appeared to lose it all dramatically in the early 2010s. But in reality, his hair loss started earlier and was likely concealed for many years by professional stylists in Hollywood. They can work miracles! Here you see quite a bit of miniaturization along the hairline and the early stages of MPB.

Conclusion

Hopefully this post helped you get an idea what early hair loss can look like. Most men go bald to some extent, at some point in their lives, so youre certainly not alone if youre in the beginning stages of the balding process. Perhaps nowhere else in the world is ones appearance tied to their profession quite like Hollywood. For bothmale and female celebrities, the right hairstyles can shape careers and set the latesttrends but can also hinder his or her future especially if ones thinning hair or receding hairline is fast becoming the punch line of every late night talk show host. In a town where image is everything, whats a young star or starlet to do? Many are quietly and then not so quietly turning to surgical hair restoration, the only permanent solution to hair loss.

Whilewe wont name names, manyyoung A-list actorsarelosing their hair in areas typical of male pattern hair loss (seeAbout Your Hair Loss), the most common form of genetically predisposed hair loss in men.Perhaps they didnt get the memofrom some of theirslightly older counterparts, that early intervention with hair loss is key.

It is essential for celebrities to identify and consultwitha physician specially trained in hair restoration sooner rather than later toavoid creating a visual history of their hair loss in the press via the unforgiving lens of thepaparazzi. In fact, the fastest growing Hollywood hair trend is celebrities addressing their hair loss at younger ages with a combination ofbothsurgicaland non-surgical treatments.(seeFinding a Hair Restoration Doctor)

A common misconception is that hair loss is strictly a male disease; however, more than40 million women in theUnited Statesalone suffer from hair loss. When it comes to hair loss, female celebrities are just like everyone elseinthat they value their hair and are concerned when they lose it. The difference though is that in their line of work, their appearance is vital to their earning potential. So any flaw, such as hair loss, is magnified and almost forces them to seek treatment to stay competitive professionally.A significant number of female celebrities are electing to undergo hair transplant procedures to correct hair loss, which may becaused by Traction Alopecia(mechanical hair loss fromwearing tight braids and weaves, as well as excessive use of hair extensions).Other significant causes for female pattern hair loss include genetics and the natural aging process.

However, more than ever beforepeople not in the spotlight report being concerned about how hair loss could impact their careers.A recent consumer survey commissioned by the ISHRS found that 77% of adults polled said they would be very or somewhat concerned if they were in their twenties and just starting out in their careers and experienced unexplained noticeable hair loss.

Fortunately, recent scientific breakthroughs have made hair restoration an option for almost everyone (seeSurgical Hair RestorationandMedical Hair Restoration). In fact, todays hair restoration surgery safely and effectively creates natural-looking, permanent results that are virtually undetectable, which is essentialfor celebrities. As such, asignificant number ofcelebrities are choosing Follicular Unit Extraction orFUEand particularly the ARTAS robotic system. Like their lifestyles, celebrities are choosing Robotic FUE to take advantage of the most advanced technology. By choosingFUE, celebrities avoidnoticeablelinearscars, allowing them theflexibilityto wear shorter hairstylesfor different roles, and minimizehis or her recovery time, whichare allbig plusesfor anyone, but especially for those in the public eye.

While rumors abound about celebrities who reportedly have sought treatment for hair loss, cosmetic surgery is still considered top secret in Hollywood with most celebrities deflecting or denying questions and rumors about cosmetic work. But there are some celebrities who choose to be open about their decisions to have hair restoration procedures, and with more of them speaking out the procedure is becoming less taboo. Most notably,Celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsey, Joe Fatone ofInSync, and recently Denver Broncos wide receiver,Wes Welkercount themselves among the thousands of successful hair transplant patients treated every year. InEurope, British celebrity, Jason Gardiner a popular TV Presenter andDancing on Icejudge has spoken publicly about his follicular unit hair restoration (seeGlossary of Hair Restoration Procedures and Terms), and UK rock star Francis Rossi, Soccer sensation, Wayne Rooney, and the Prime Minister of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi, admittedto having had a hair transplant all celebrities, each with different personalities, but all share elected to have hair transplant surgery to address their thinning hair. Are we better for knowing? Does it tarnish their elusive and hallowed celebrity status certainly not in our field of doctors andscientistsand mostcertainlynot in the minds of people who strugglewithhair loss around the globe. In fact, they have done an incredible job of educating prospective patients on the benefits of surgical hair restorationand the consistentnatural-looking results thatcan be achieved with strip harvest surgery as well asFUE.
